As a hurricane approaches the small town of Port Emmett, a varied group of residents are visited by a horror that could not be denied. Fifty years ago a bridge collapsed plunging a circus train into the dark water below. The clown car was never recovered. In ’sins of the father’ tradition, zombie clowns emerge from the bay and exact revenge on descendants of those who left them buried under the silt and mud for half a century!

Dead Until Dark is the 1st volume in Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Series.
The series, and it’s heroine - plucky mind-reading waitress Sookie Stackhouse, are every bit as endearing as fans claim. Vampires have come out of the coffin and Sookie falls for the first one to move into her small Louisiana town. The smalltown setting is pitch-perfect and the interpretation of the cannon of supernatural creatures is fresh and original. I began reading these too soon after reading the first few volumes of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Tanya Huff’s first two Blood Books and so I occasionally have to stop and mentally diagram which creatures have which powers in which universe.
Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball is the Executive Producer of True Blood, the HBO series being adapted from the series.

Just when you think nothing new can be done with the zombie apocalypse scenario, someone does the obvious and surprises you with the cleverness of it.

Dead Set (UK-2008; TV series; dir. Yann Demanage) lets the zombie apocalypse loose while a bunch of the usual mismatched folk are safely holed away in Big Brother house, and are thus oblivious to what’s going on outside in the real world - until, that is, someone gets evicted.
You can read the full synopsis on the show’s very classy website. It’s a five-episode British TV show that clearly opens by pretending to be an ordinary Big Brother series and descending into gut-munching chaos from there. Do I detect a metaphor?
Meanwhile, here’s the trailer:
The site also has a very cool feature that allows you to take part in some bloodily cute viral advertising. It’s under the “get infected” link.

Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain, Alice and Matt must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen’s deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.
